Make your speakers sing again You can try to repair your ESL yourself by using repair/upgrade materials like our VLC (very low conductivity) coating
Measuring surface resisitivity. Above: By ring probe and Milli-TO2. Below : By Keithley resistivity adaptor and picoA source
Easy but effective way for DIYers - not having a special gauge or adjustable stretching jig- to adjust the diaphragms' tension. Simply place a known weight, equivalent to the original foil's tension, on the new diaphragm to be stretched. Stretch until the weight begins to hover (place a piece of felt as shield beneath the weight for not hurting the film). By this way one will get very close enough to the original values. The weight should have a vertical shape, so you very early realize the correct tension because of the weight beginning to wobble. But do not forget to measure at multiple points of the area for getting an evenly stretched diaphragm! INFO: You can also realize the correct mechanical tension of a single ESL63 panel by simply measuring its acoustical resonance frequency by using your PC's audio card even with a very primitive microphone of any kind.
Capacity of the panels. You can test the correct repair of your ESL panels by measuring the capacity. E.g. an ESL57 MHT panel should have a plate to plate capacity of about 50pF. The capacity plate to diaphragm is about 30pF. The bass panel has 250pF plate to plate and 125pF plate to diaphragm. Plate to plate and plate to diaphragm insulation resistance should show at least more than 10E10 Ohms.
Have a look at our catalogue site for more information on these materials.

Some practical repair/refurbish hints for DIYers
This tool consist of a conductive double sided sticky tape and a one side gold metallized foil with a high- ohmic coating on the opposite side. !Not for practical use with Quad ESL63. But the better for Quad ESL57, no corroding anymore! Using these tools will result in a permanently non-corroding, ever lasting EHT HV contact. N.B.: These tools are part of our "Coating Liquid" offer.
Quad ESL-63 Dust Cover Fixing/Installation for DIYers One of the questions for the Quad ESL diy-refurbisher. What film to use and how to correctly apply it?? The best dust cover foil will surely be Polypropylene. All experts will agree because of its almost resonance free acoustical properties. That is why we are strictly using 3µ Hoechst PHD Polypropylene foil as a modification to the original Quad dustcover foil. We are doing so for the ESL63 as well as for the ESL57 types (the bass panels get a 6µ dust cover) , with extraordinary results compared to the former original foil. But to customers specification we can install the original dust cover as well. Make your choice. There are several possible ways to stretch the ESL63 dust cover to the frame. Below you see some pictures of our kind of the procedure. It is safe, reliable and easy to do.
Double sided sticky tape around the dust cover frame. Removing the protecting paper and simply turning the frame up side down with the sticky side to the prepared film.
Slowly and safely cutting the foil with a solder iron or knife.
The total frame with film ready to be "clipped"
The frame is about to be clipped to the main frame after safely putting the total unit from left to right behind the vertical aluminum stiffeners
Ready, absolutely and permanently wrinkle free after correct heat gun shrinking at 164°C (+/-2°).

How to get a precise Mechanical Stretching of an ESL foil without a gauge
Easy but effective way for DIYers - not having a special gauge - to adjust the diaphragms' tension. Simply place a known weight, equivalent to the original foil's tension, on the new diaphragm to be stretched. Stretch until the weight begins to hover. By this way one will get very close enough to the original values. But you have to verify the correct tension on multiple points of the diaphragm area.
